Jandy's Meanderings: Jandy’s Meanderings » American Idol 6×01: Minneapolis Auditions

Ok. I have generally made fun of people who watch Idol, although I understand the inclination to do so. So tonight, I watched the show from Minneapolis. It was somewhat painful, but I am hooked a bit and want to see if there is anyone better in Seattle. Although the teaser didn't make it seem like there would be. A couple of comments on the ones I saw:

Girl with boss - It was a shame she couldn't carry a tune. She was pretty and would have a nice stage presence.

Screamy large gal with bottle blond hair - I couldn't watch with the sound on. I wanted her to be able to sing just to prove to Simon that looks aren't everything. But alas, she was no Kate Smith. (Jandy, you know who Kate Smith is, right?)

Grovely voiced teenaged boy - What a shame he couldn't lose the grovelly affectation so we could hear his real voice. He was on pitch and sort of cute in that boy-band sort of way.

Army gal - I liked her personality a lot and I hope she can be better pitched as the competition goes forward. But, like you, I wondered what would happen if she gets called to go to Iraq.

Sorry for the long comment. I start off expecting to take over your comments section. I guess I have an Idol fan deep inside me after all.

Hope you're keeping warm in TX.

Jennifer, it is FREEZING here. I kid you not. Freezing rain and all. People keep telling me I'm a wimp, being from St. Louis and complaining about a little bad weather--but that's why I moved from St. Louis! Hee.

Anyway. Yeah, I used to mock Idol-watchers, too. Then when I started watching, I mocked myself. Now I just don't care. I love show, and I'm getting less ashamed of it every day. ;) Usually there are more good ones than there were tonight, though. Minneapolis was truly terrible. Still, they do tend to concentrate on the bad auditions.

I vaguely know who Kate Smith is. I've heard the name, and I think I've seen and heard her, but I couldn't swear I have. There were a bunch of screamers tonight, though. Honestly.

Yeah, I really liked gravelly-voiced teen boy. Loved his personality and his willingness to go learn the ABBA song, but then he sang it JUST THE SAME! I almost wish they'd let him go through, because he did have a point about the vocal coaches in Hollywood. Might've helped a lot.

Hey! I am sick of Idol right now because Fox news at 9 keeps showing the same horrible clips and all the supposed scoop on Idol VI-Blah-2 hours was enough. I agree the winner was not on tonight's show.

Debbie, this is why I don't watch the news. :D Also, it's boring, but repeating clips of stuff I've already seen over and over is the other reason (actually, that's boring, too...). Almost everyone was horrible tonight. I thought they were only showing the horrible auditions, but they actually only let seventeen through! Made me really glad I'm not one of the judges.

I agree with your comments, except that I don't remember anyone's name. I did like the girl from...was it Columbia? Hopefully we will watch a better show tonight-but for me-after choir. ttyl...love idol talk!!

one thing that really bothered me last night was Simon's comments like, "I really like you", "I think people will like you"...and comments about looks...hmmmm.
Also why are people singing non-songs? ie the #1 Idol fan/music major? urban amish guy, too-is all the talent used up and we are now going to see all gimmick? (Apollo?)Hoping for a really good show tonigh...

Debbie, yeah, sometimes Simon gets too caught up on image, I think. He's trying to sell a "whole package," though...he's looking for someone with voice+personality+looks. But it is annoying at times. I'm hoping that they just showed all the gimmicky ones, and that it's not really as high as percentage of total auditioners as it seems. They've got to come up with better people than this though, or the competition part of the show's going to be utter crap.

    Jandy,
I think it is colder in TX than it is in St Louis. It might have gotten bad with ice etc. out where your parents live, but from 270 east and in south county, we didn't have any really bad ice or anything. Kirkwood, did, however lose power once again.
